Today was a perfectly gorgeous day to be out at Pedernales Falls State Park. I was greeted by some great looks of a Northern Parula Warbler at Hackenberg Creek. Louisiana Waterthrushes were keeping me company at three survey locations. A Sharp-shinned Hawk was flying upstream with a meal in its beak. The first Broad-winged Hawk came by and perched for a while at Tobacco Creek. At station 5 the Carolina Chickadee is nesting in the same natural cavity as last year 20 feet up in a dead Pecan tree. Nest box 5 is only 15 feet away and unused. Along the rocky outcrops hiking up from the river I saw this Cedar Sage flowering.
The Summer Tanagers were the highlighted new arrivals for today. Their beautiful crimson red feathers and song were a great treat to see and hear. This wooded photo below shows typical Golden-cheeked Warbler habitat. A mix of Cedar Elm, Escarpment Live Oak and Juniper are found in this ravine.Pipe Vine Swallowtail butterflies continue to frequent the flowering Yellow & Red Buckeyes along the river. I can also hear the Black-chinned Hummingbirds buzzing this way and that in association with the buckeyes.
